Buying Guide

Sound Engine and Authenticity

The heart of any stage piano is its sound. The Roland RD-88 EX uses Roland’s acclaimed SuperNATURAL technology, which models the complex behavior of an acoustic grand piano, from the hammer strike to the resonance of the soundboard. This engine delivers rich, dynamic tones that respond to your touch. Additionally, the ZEN-Core sound engine provides over 3000 additional sounds, including organs, strings, and synths, making it a versatile tool for any genre. If you are new to digital pianos, our beginner’s guide to choosing a digital piano can help you understand what to listen for.

Keyboard Action and Feel

A stage piano’s keyboard must replicate the touch of an acoustic grand. The RD-88 EX features the PHA-4 (Progressive Hammer Action) keyboard with ivory feel and escapement. This design provides graded resistance (heavier in the low keys, lighter in the high keys) and a realistic let-off simulation. For pianists transitioning from an acoustic, this keyboard offers a familiar, expressive experience that encourages dynamic playing.

Portability and Built-In Features

For live performers, weight and setup matter. The RD-88 EX is designed to be portable, weighing under 40 pounds, yet it includes built-in stereo speakers that fill a room without external amplification. This is a rare and valuable feature for rehearsals, small gigs, or late-night practice. The instrument also features built-in rhythms, a USB audio/MIDI interface for seamless computer integration, and a dedicated control mode for Apple MainStage.
